The oxidising agent used in these reactions is normally a solution of sodium or potassium dichromate(VI)acidified with dilute sulphuric acid. Ifoxidation occurs, the orange solutioncontaining the dichromate(VI) ions is reduced to a green solution containing chromium(III) ions.
