The displacement reaction occurs because copper is more reactive than silver A shining great white posit of silver is formed on the copper strip and the solution becomes blue due to the formation of copper nitrate

Chemical reaction:

AgNO3 + Cu ----> Cu (NO3)2 + Ag

balanced,

2AgNO3 + Cu ----> Cu (NO3)2 + 2 Ag
