The British first visited India in 1601 while traveling to Indonesia. But the Portuguese had arrived in 1498. By the 1600s Portuguese was a Lingua Franca in coastal cities across south East Asia.

The Portuguese and Dutch had already published dictionaries & travelogues.

The British had been earlier trading with Arabs & Persians. Both of those language were known in India and were known to the British traders.
