A hypertonic solution is one in which there is more solute outside the cell than inside. This means that water is more concentrated inside the cell than outside. Because of osmosis, water will always travel from high concentration to low concentration, so water will travel from inside the cell to outside the cell. This will cause the cell to shrink.

A hypertonic solution has a higher concentration of dissolved solutes, and a lower concentration of water compared to the cell. Since the cell membrane is semi-permeable, not all solutes can cross the cell membrane, but water can always cross the cell membrane.

So, water will move from the cell to the hypertonic solution from where it is in higher concentration (in the cell) to where it is in lower concentration (in the solution). This process is called osmosis.
