when copper metal is heated in air,it gets oxidised to form copper oxide.The reddish brown colour of copper turns into black copper oxide.

2Cu(s)+O2(g)------->2CuO(g)

It is a redox reaction in which copper is oxidised to copper oxide and oxygen is reduced.

hope this helps you!
