When an electric current is passed through the brine that is sodium chloride then the hydrogen gas forms at negative electrode and chlorine gas at the positive electrode.
The chemical equation will be,
2NaCl+2H_2O\rightarrow 2Na^++2OH^-+Cl_2+H_2
In this reaction, the hydrogen ions gain electrons (reduction) to form hydrogen atoms and the atoms of hydrogen combine to form molecules of hydrogen gas.
The chloride ions lose electrons (oxidation) to form chlorine atoms and the atoms of chlorine combine to form molecules of chlorine gas.
