if the egg is not fertilized it lives for about one day. Since the ovary releases one egg every month the uterus also prepares itself every month to receive a fertilized egg. Thus it's lining becomes thick. This would be required for nourishing the embryo if fertilization had taken place. Now however this lining is not needed anymore. so the lining slowly breaks and comes out through the vagina as blood and mucous.
This cycle takes places roughly every month and is known as menstrual cycle or period. It usually lasts for 3 to 8 days.

Every month the ovary which is present in a female reproductive system produces one egg which is to be fertilized by sperm for implantation and production of an baby or we can say offspring

but when this egg ovum is not fertilized then the uterus lining which prepare itself for implantation of zygote by thickening itself and by providing with blood vessels starts to break and with some amount of blood and mucus this comes out from the vagina of female reproductive system this flow is known as menstrual flow and this process is known as menstruational cycle.

this cycle occurs every month and the first cycle after puberty in girls is known as menarche and the last period cycle in women is known as menopause
