These type of reactions are used in refining of some metals like copper.
In this a circuit is to be made and joined by cathode and anode placed in water with diluted acid. Here,acid is to be put in water to make circuit complete because putting acid in water makes the solution more good conductor of electricity . Anode is thick which is made up of impure metal. On passing current , pure metal is deposited on the cathode .
The reaction takes place in case of NaCl

At anode ( here, oxidation takes place)
2Cl- (aq) ------------ Cl2 (s) + 2e-

At cathode (here, reduction takes place )
2Na+ (aq) + 2e- -------------- 2Na

Here, the impurities will settle down below the anode which is also known as anode mud.

When electric current is passed through acidulated water, it will produce electrolysis. During this process, water is decomposed into hydrogen and oxygen. The positive ions with some move to cathode while the negative ions will also move to anode.

When electric current is passed through acidulated water using inert electrodes, water will be decomposed into oxygen and hydrogen.

Positive ions (H+) with move to the cathode while Negative ions (OH-) will move to the anode

At cathode: Hydrogen gas will formAt anode: Oxygen gas will form

At the cathode (negative electrode) H+ will gain electrons and form hydrogen gas;2H+(aq) + 2e– ---> H2(g)

At the anode (positive electrode)OH- will lose electrons and form oxygen gas;4OH–(aq) ---> 2H2O(l) + O2(g) + 4e–

The overall equation for the electrolysis of acidulated water is:

2H2O(l) ---> 2H2(g) + O2(g)
