If limestone is heated strongly, it breaks down to form calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. Calcium oxide is also called quicklime. It is yellow when hot, but white when cold.

Explanation:

Lime stone is also known as calcium carbonate has chemical formula CaCO_{3}.

So, when we strongly heat limestone then it decomposes to give slaked lime (CaO) and carbon dioxide.

The chemical reaction equation will be as follows.

          CaCO_{3} \overset{heat}{\rightarrow} CaO + CO_{2}

Calcium oxide (CaO) is also known as quick lime. This reaction is a decomposition reaction.
