Plant cells are enclosed by a rigid cellwall. When the plant cell is placed in a hypotonic solution , it takes up water by osmosis and starts to swell, but thecell wall prevents it from bursting. Theplant cell is said to have become "turgid" i.e. swollen and hard. This results in causing the cell to swell and burst.
Hypotonic solution: In thissolution the solute concentration is lower than that of the cell fluid concentration. As a result, water moves into the cell from the surrounding medium through a cellmembrane. This results in causing thecell to swell and burst.
