When a red blood cell is placed in ahypertonic solution, it shrinks as water is drawn out of the cell and into the surrounding solution. If the sameblood cellis placed in a hypotonicsolution, the blood cell grows in size.Blood cells in isotonic solutions do not shrink or swell.

RBC cells start reducing if placed in a hypertonic solution.

  • One solution is hypertonic if it has more concentration than the cells.
  • IV solution is an example of a hypertonic solution.
  • Red Blood Cells in the blood are responsible for transferring oxygen.
  • Low RBC symptoms include dizziness, anaemia, fatigue, etc.
  • When RBC is kept in hypertonic solution then these cells start to reduce by losing water.
  • Osmosis is the process in which water moves from a high concentration place to a lower one.
