When red blood cells are placed in distilled water, which is hypotonic compared to the solution contained within the cell membranes, the distilled water will diffuse into the RBC and cause them to burst.

The distilled water is less concentrated as compare to the concentration of the RBC inside. Due to this hypotonic system the water from the the outside tries to move into the red blood cells and then the cells can burst as well.
Opposite can happen if the red blood cells are places in the sea water solution.
