Slaked lime [Ca(OH)₂] on treatment with temporary hard water, reacts with the calcium bicarbonates present in it producing insoluble calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate precipitates removing the hardness of water.

Reaction:

Ca(OH)₂ + Ca(HCO₃)₂ →  2CaCO₃ + 2H₂O
