We get hydrogen gas by reduction. Red hot iron reduces steam to hydrogen.

3Fe + 4H2O = Fe3O4 + 4H2

The other solid product is magnetite, Fe3O4, a mixed oxide (FeO.Fe2O3) of iron.

when steam is passed over heated iron hydrogen is released because iron displaces hydrogen ...

the reaction is given below ~

3Fe + 4H2O ――― Fe3O4 + 4H2

as iron does not react with normal water it reacts with steam and produces iron(II,III) oxide which is also known as ferrous ferric oxide...

hope it helps...
