When eggs or Ova doesn't get any sperm to get fertilised then period begins.

First of all when ova comes out of the Ovary then it stays in the Fallopian tube for almost 20-24 hours. Then it reaches to Uterus where it goes to get fertilised but if there is no sperm present to get fertilised with it then it breakdowns Endometrium which causes bleeding. It takes almost a week or two to start period.

It starts in girls at the age of 10 to 12 only. The starting of period in Girls is called as Menarche and it stops till the age of 45 - 50 years and stoppage is called Menopause. Periods last long for a week only if eggs doesn't get fertilised but if it get fertilised then a very very tiny cell forms called Zygote.
