when a matter is heated , energy is applied to the particles inside the matter and these particles gets energetized and hence begins to move or collide with each other...when it is cooled, energy is released from particles and hence they become immobile.example: evaporation and condensation of water

When the matter is heated then its subatomic particales gains energy and move very fastly because of this the matter (object) 's volume increases and similarly when the matter is cooled, it shrinks.
