What happend to the intruder at last in the story if i were you?

Gerrard tells the intruder that he himself is a murderer. Gerrard tells the intruder that if he kills him, police would hang him if not as himself then as Gerrard. The intruder falls in his trap and agrees to run away with him in his car. Gerrard acts smartly and opens the door which is actually the door of a cupboard. The intruder looks into it to see what it contains. Gerrard suddenly pushes him into the cupboard. He, at last, calls the police to arrest the intruder.
