On May 10, 1774, Louis XVI ascended the throne of France. In 1775 Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys captured Ft. Ticonderoga in New York from the British. In 1869 a golden spike was driven into a rail tie at Promontory, Utah, completing the first transcontinental railroad.
