Answer:

In september 1657, Shah Jahan fell seriously ill. This set war of succession among his four sons in which his third son. Aurangzeb, emerged victorious. Shah Jahan recovered from his illness but Aurangzeb put his father under house arrest in Agra Fort from July 1658 until his death in January 1666. Shah Jahan spent his last 8 years gazing out the window at the Taj Mahal, attended by his daughter Jahanara Begum. On January 22, 1666, Shah Jahan died at the age of 74. He was interred in the Taj Mahal, beside his beloved Mumtaz Mahal. After his death Aurangzeb out of his four sons became the new Emperor of India.
