The question is whether General Nathan Bedford Forrest, the commander, ordered the massacre (as the Union press immediately claimed), knew of but did nothing to halt or even encouraged the massacre, or, as Forrest later alleged, had nothing to do with the spontaneous action of soldiers enraged at seeing former slaves fighting them with guns.
