☆ Mysore emerged as an important power in South India under Haider Ali, who established control over the state in 1761. The company  in an attempt to establish its political and economic control over India eyed Mysore.

☆ The British regarded  Hyder Ali and  Tipu Sultan as dangerous, arrogant and a threat to their position which  had to be crushed.

☆ Haider Ali was initially a small officer in the Mysore army and later rose to prominence, and established sultanate of Mysore.

☆ He was a opportunist and a brilliant commander who recognised the importance of western military methods and training.

☆ Haider Ali thus played an important role in modernising army, by deploying rockets.He was engaged in war with the British .

☆ He defeated the British forces in 1769, however died in 1782, during the course of second Anglo-Mysore war.

☆ Tipu sultan who wanted to retain the Independent position of Mysore and discontinued all trade with company. He stood against the British and resisted its control. Tipu Sultan also established close contacts with the French and modernised his army.

☆ It was in the battle of Seringapatam of 1799  that marked the victory of the British, and defeat of  Tipu Sultan.
