The doctrine of lapse was issued by Lord Richard Wellesley, one among the many governor-generals of India.
This stated that if an Indian ruler died without a male heir, his kingdom would ‘lapse’ ie. become a part of the British territory.
A number of territories were seized due to this like Jhansi, Awadh, Hyderabad, etc.
