Under the British rule, many of the Mughal amirs found it impossible to maintain large establishments like havelis. Havelis were therefore subdivided by their owners and sold off. Often, the street fronts of the havelis were turned into shops or warehouses, and some havelis were taken over by the upcoming mercantile class of Delhi. However, many also fell in decay and disuse.
