After the war destroyed their home, Lucia with her two brothers were thrown on streets subjected to cold, harsh weather and starvation. She also got separated from her brothers. She got tuberculosis of spine while struggling to survive, after which she was discovered by her brothers and got admitted to the hospital.
(P.S:we do not know how she got tuberculosis of spine. That was not mentioned in the story.)
