When you breathe in, your diaphragm contracts and moves downward. This increases the space in your chest cavity, from which your lungs gets expanded. The muscles between your ribs also help enlarge the chest cavity. They contract to pull your rib cage both upward and downward when you inhale.

rib cage get expanded when we inhale n on expiration it regains its original dimension. on deepen inhalation and exhalation the expansion n contraction of rib cage increases to certain levels due to profound action of muscle holding it. primary muscle which helps in inspiration are intercostals, sternocleidomastoid, diaphragm etc. expiration is passive movt
