The "Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor" is an Ancient Egyptian story from the Middle Kingdom about a voyage to "the King's mines."
The story starts with a sailor announcing or stating his return from a sea voyage. He is returning from what appears to be a failed expedition and is concerned about how the king will greet him. An attendant comforts him, advising him on how to behave in front of the king and repeating the proverb, "A man's mouth saves him." To encourage his master, he tells him about a previous voyage in which he overcame disaster, including encounters with a god and the king.
When a sudden wind caused the waves to be eight cubits high, a sailor from a ship of 150 sailors fell overboard and washed up on an island. He finds shelter and food there ,he says "there was nothing that was not there" . He hears thunder, feels the earth shake, and sees a giant serpent approach him while making a burnt offering to the gods. The serpent repeatedly asks him who brought him to the island. When the sailor is unable to respond, the serpent leads him to its lair and asks the question three times more. The sailor tells his story again, this time claiming to be on a mission for the king.
