When the three
friends tried to execute their idea of taking bath in the river, all of them
seemed unwilling to plunge into the river. The water looked damp and chilly:
the wind felt cold. First George declined to take bath, followed by
Montomorency, and Harris. However, the narrator thought he would sprinkle some
water over him by going down to the edge and just throwing the water over
himself; so he took a towel and crept
out on the bank and wormed his way along on to the branch of a tree that dipped
down into the water. It was bitterly cold. The wind cut like a knife. He thought
he would not throw the water over himself after all. He would go back into the
boat and dress; and he turned to do so; and, as he turned, the silly branch
gave way, and he and the towel went in together with a tremendous splash.
