what happened when a acid or a base is added to the water ? why does the beaker appear warm?why should we add acid or base to the water and not water to the acid base
Answers
Answer:
base should be added drop by drop to water or else the reaction is highly exothermism and migth spill all over
When a strong base such as NaOH or KOH or a strong acid such as concentrated sulphuric acid is added into water, then due to high dielectric constant of water, the dissociation of the molecules takes place to yield OH- (hydroxyl) and H+(Hydrogen) ions respectively, this releases a large amount of energy in the form of heat. Adding a concentrated acid such as sulphuric acid into water is safe as the acid being heavier, settles down and gradual mixing takes place, the heat energy formed is easily dissapitated in the water to form a solution, But f the opposite is done, large amount of heat energy formed may cause sudden boiling or splashing of the conc. acid or base.
