When Franz was asked to recite the rules for the participles he was unable to tell them properly. He has never paid attention in the classes neither did he wanted to attend his classes. Therefore he was unable to tell about the participles to M.Hamel.
Instead of reacting in an aggressive way M. Hamel reacted in a very different way. He didn't scold Franz about not completing his task. He only said to Franz that he should feel bad about this.
