become independent
How do you know when you've matured and become independent? You'll just know it in your core. You'll have the resources you need to get what you want. You'll know when you can kick back and relax or party, and when you have to say no to that Thursday night party because you need to reach a goal.
However, maturity and independence aren't trophies you win and put away in a cabinet. When I was 25, with a job, a lover, a cat and my own furniture and apartment, I thought I was mature, but I had many emotional issues to work on. At 57, I look back on my life and see that I had many lessons to learn, and still do. Maturity and independence are continually unfolding processes.
The life of a young adult doesn't have to be either all fun or all study. Find a balance between studying and playing. Recreation is time to give your mind a rest and to make connections with others. Often solutions to problems come to us when we are doing something completely unrelated to our problems.
There is always the danger of letting your independence slip and giving your power away, and it happens, sometimes, in the most beautiful way -- when you fall in love. You may leave your family behind and they may have such love for you that it doesn't matter what you do. But when you begin to worry about what another is thinking about you, your independence begins to resemble water slipping through your fingers.
If you want to have your own family, you have to walk the path of interdependence. You have to be an example and allow your loved ones their own independence, while ensuring their safety.
Many people when they reach their 40s experience a crisis because they have traveled a path that was set out by their family, friends', and society's expectations for them. Some people break down when this happens, and some people breakthrough to a more authentic self.
