when an opening occurs on the United States Supreme Court ( due to the retirement or death of a sitting justice)the president will nominate someone to fill that vacancy.however, before that nominee can be officially seated on the court,he or she must be approved by the United States Senate.usually, the Senate Judiciary committee will hold a public hearing for the president nominee asking him or her questions about qualification, judicial, philosophy, etc. Then, the Senate will vote on whether or not to approve the nominee for the court. If a majority of senators what to confirm the appointment, that person will be formally given a lifetime appointment on the supreme court.
