Some diagnoses are ones of exclusion. Meaning there is no observable factor, but if you rule everything else out.. then that is one circumstance where an autopsy or post-mortem can be inconclusive.
But what a Medical Examiner or Coroner would usually rule is “Undetermined” for the manner of death. In the USA there are 5 accepted manners of death: Natural, Homicide, Suicide, Accident, and Undetermined.
There are thousands and thousands of “Causes” of death- but only 5 “Manners” of death. It is the Medical Examiner or Coroner’s duty to determine both.
