A convergent plate boundary occurs when two plates move toward, or into, one another. When this happens, one plate usually slides beneath the other, in a process known as subduction. In this case material is pushed down on one side and up on the other. Both sides of the boundary may experience earthquakes. When two continental plates collide, mountain ranges can form from the material being pushed up. When an oceanic and a continental plate collide, a trench forms in the ocean and mountains or volcanoes form on land. Two oceanic plates form deep trenches when they collide. Oceanic plate convergent boundaries can also form volcanoes.
