George's watch had gone wrong one evening and stopped at a quarter-past eight when he was lodging at the house of a certain Mrs. Gippings eighteen months ago. He had not known it at that time for some reason or the other and he had forgotten to wind it up whe he went to bed. He had hung it up over his pillow without ever looking at the thing. It was in winter when this had happened, very near the shortest day and quite foggy at the time so it had been still very dark when George woke up in the morning with an incorrect impression of the time to guide him. He reached up and hauled down his watch to see that it was quarter past eight. George had to be in the City by nine, he had to hurriedly bathe, wash and shave himself in cold water because there was no time left to wait for hot water. George snatched the watch and rushed downstairs but the sitting room was dark and silent with neither a fire lit nor breakfast served. He dashed out of the door and saw that even the door was unbolted. He ran hard for a quarter of a mile and it was then that it had begun to dawn upon him that the streets were deserted. At length he reached Holborn and saw just three men there, one of whom was a policeman. A neighbouring clock went off somewhere and George realized it had only been three o'clock. He realized that his watch had given him the lie and the policemen let him off after questioning, asking him to go back to his address and wind up the watch. He could not sleep after reaching his lodgings, he felt very wakeful and eventually decided to go out for a walk.
