The axon terminal of a neuron releases specialized chemicals called neurotransmitters. These chemicals travel through the synapse and reach the dendrites of the successive neuron. These chemical messengers cross the synapse and starts a electrical impulse

When a nerve impulse reaches the synapse at the end of a neuron, it cannot pass directly to the next one. Instead, it triggers the neuron to release a chemical neurotransmitter. The neurotransmitter drifts across the gap between the two neurons.

HOPE IT HELPS!!!
