The thing happens during copying of DNA is as follows:

  • DNA can be copied by itself precisely during cell division, this is called DNA replication.
  • To produce two identical DNA molecules, double- stranded DNA molecule is copied by the process of replication.
  • Occurrence of this process is one of the basic processes in a cell.
  • Every existing DNA's strand acts as template for replication to accomplish this.

Copying a DNA is actually called DNA replication which occurs every time before mitosis or meiosis. There are several steps which are briefly described below.

Explanation:

  • The DNA replication actually involves formation of two copies of double stranded DNAs from a single one.
  • At first several enzyme like Helicase, Gyrase etc helps in the separation of the two strands of mother DNA by breaking the hydrogen bonds and releasing the twist of the strand.
  • Then enzyme called DNA dependent DNA polymerase comes to get attached with the mother DNA and start bringing a piece of nucleotide which is corresponding to the nitrogen base present on the template strand.
  • Then DNA ligase seals those individual nucleotides and thus a new DNA strand is formed.
