diakinesis. the final stage in the first meiotic prophase in gametogenesis, inwhich the chromosomes achieve their maximum thickness. The chiasmata and nucleolus disappear, the nuclear membrane degenerates, and the spindle fibers form in preparation for the formation of dyads.

Diakinesis is known as a process that occurs during the last stage of prophase in prophase 1. There are five stages in prophase 1 namely lepotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene and diakinesis of which diakinesis is the last stage. In this stage chiasma's are present between homologous chromosomes and the seperate chromosomes move apart from each other. Near to the end of Diakinesis the nuclear envelope starts to break down and the mitotic spindle begins to develop.
