What happens during expansion and contraction of matter?

Expansion of MATTER :

All three states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) expand when heated. Heat causes the molecules to move faster, (heat energy is converted to kinetic energy ) which means that the volume of a gas increases more than the volume of a solid or liquid.

Contraction of MATTER :

When substances expand or contract, their particles stay the same size. It is the space between the particles that changes: the particles in a solid vibrate more when it is heated, and take up more room. the particles in a liquid move around each other more when it is heated, and take up more room.

When substances expand or contract, their particles remain the same size. The space between the particles changes (it applies to all states of matter).

Expansion of a matter

The particles in a matter move more when it is heated, and take up more space.

Contraction of a matter

The particles in a matter move less when it is cooled, and take up less space.

Hope it helps!!!
