Aluminium is an amphoteric element which means that it reacts with both acids and bases to produce a salt and hydrogen. The three most well known amphoteric elements are lead, aluminum and zinc.
Thus is the reaction
Al + NaOH →NaAlO2 + H2.
NaAlO2 is sodium aluminate.
Hope it helps!!
