What happens if an iron piece is dropped between two poles of strong magnet?

If the magnetic poles are unlike poles then they will magnetise the iron piece but it will still be stationary . If u have like poles of the magnet facing the iron piece , the iron piece wont be magnetised . ... What happens when an iron pole dropped between two poles of a strong magnet?
