What happens if decomposers are removed from the food web
Answers
- If decomposers are removed from the food web, then the biological cycles are not completed.
- If the decomposers are not present in the ecosystem, the remains of the other organisms accumulate.
Answer: Detritus food chain will suffer/slow down
Explanation: Basically there are two food chains, Grazing food chain(GFC) and detritus food chain(DFC). When living organisms are being eaten by another then its called grazing food chain for example plants eaten by grazing animals whereas when dead and decaying matter is eaten that is included into detritus food chain. A simple analogy to remember this is if food goes up the ground then thats grazing and when food goes down the ground then thats detritus (Note: This is only for understanding and not always applicable, even an apple which you eat is included into DFC).
Based on the relative importance of the type of decomposer you assume to be extinct the DFC will either slow down or break. (Refer to rivet hypothesis)
