Epiglottis plays a vital role while eating anything.  Epiglottis is a leaf shaped flap of cartilage which is present behind the tongue and at the top of larynx or voice box. The main function of the epiglottis is to seal off the wind pipe while swallowing the food and divert it to the esophagus. If there is some sort of malfunctioning in the epiglottis and accidentally food is inhaled into wind pipe then this could result into the death of a person.
