The walls of uterus are thickened, and a there is a rich supply of blood through capillaries in the uterine region in anticipation of fertilization to occur. But when the fertilization of egg doesn't occur, the egg is shed out of the body along with the uterine wall in the form of blood and mucous. This process is known as mensuration, which occurs periodically once in every month in women. The first mensuration is called menarche and it lasts till the lady is 45-50 years old and then ends and is then called menopause. After menopause women are reproductively inactive.
