A reverse biased diode can't hold out forever. When the voltage reaches a high negative value known as the breakdown voltage, VBR, the diode starts to conduct in the reverse direction. At breakdown, the current sharply increases and becomes very highin the negative direction.

If reverse bias voltage exceeds the permissible limit, reverse leakage current of the device will go dangerously high and may result in irreversible damage of the component. If the device simply opens, the damage may be limited only to the said device.
