The information sensed is detected by the specialised types of nerve cells known as receptors. The receptors in the form of cells , tissues and organs receive stimuli and cause the sensory nerves to pick the impulses.

Receptors sense the external stimuli , such as heat and pain. They also trigger an impulse in the form of an electrical signal which sends message to the brain or spinal cord . If the receptors fail to work properly , no message would get conveyed to the brain and all the necessary functions would stop in the body , which may even lead to death . For example , in case of damaged receptors , if we accidentally touch any hot object , our hands would get burnt as damaged receptors would not be able to perceive the external stimuli of heat and pain .
