when the rate of respiration is high the molecules present in plants break down to compensate the reduced rate of photosynthesis

If the rate of respiration is more than the rate of photosynthesis, the energy consumed will be more than the energy produced. Since, plants are autotrophs and they don't have external source of nutrition for gaining this energy. It will die.
