First let's understand what is photosynthesis !

Photosynthesis is the biochemical procees in which the light energy is converted into chemical energy in presence of sunlight/UV rays.

Rate of respiration is related to photosynthesis. Hence if the rate of respiration is higher than rate of photosynthesis, then the plant will consume extra amount of oxygen. Therefore the rate should be optimum to carry functions smoothly.
