Friction is a force that opposes motion; if the machine has moving parts, this means some of energy will actually be used to overcome friction (and get dissipated as heat) rather than do any useful work. This reduces the efficiency of the machine and means more energy is required to do the same amount of useful work as a result of friction. Therefore, if we reduce friction, we can reduce the energy dissipated in overcoming friction and increase the machine’s efficiency.
