if you try petrol in diesel engines, it will not burn. So, your engine will not start. But if your engines compression ratio is high enough to achieve the self ignition temperature of petrol(500°C), it explodes instead of progressive combustion. A phenomenon called knocking occurs, which will spoil your engine.
