what happens magnetic is applied in the path of cathode rays

The cathode ray deflects toward north of the magnet which corresponds to the +ve side of the magnet.

by applying fleming's left hand rule we conclude that whenever magnetic field is applied in such a way shown here the cathode rays bend downwards however if poles get exchanged the cathode rays bend upwards
